The idea for BREATHABLE GLASS -- In the last years and decades, wine glass research primarily has concentrated on finding the goblet shape that optimally brings out a specific wine to advantage, and this has brought about considerable success, providing today's wine connoisseur with a great variety of different goblet shapes and sizes for enjoying exquisite wines.
This approach, however, increasingly reaches its limits today, because a continuing differentiation of glasses not only with respect to the type of vine, but also to growing region and year, can be realized technically, but hardly can be put into practice by the individual consumer. For approximately five-years Eisch has therefore been dealing with the question of how to impart an additional dimension to an optimally shaped wine glass for the benefit of wine enjoyment.
The manufacturing technology of BREATHABLE GLASS -- the result of this research work is a new generation of goblets, the "Breathable Glasses" – i.e., glasses that "breathe." These glasses are made from a special raw material mixture, the so-called batch, in lead-free crystal-glass quality. After the actual manufacturing process, the glasses undergo an oxygenation process which gives the Breathable Glass its unique properties.
The properties of BREATHABLE GLASS -- many wines need to be in contact with atmospheric oxygen in order to optimally develop their bouquet and aromas, which is why the wine usually is opened one to two hours before drinking, and is decanted in a special carafe. Many a time, however, these one to two hours are not available, because who does always know whether he wants to drink a glass of wine in two hours, and if so, which one? In a restaurant, the ordered wine has to be served within only a few minutes, and also at home the small glass of wine cannot necessarily be planned hours in advance.
This is exactly where the Breathable Glass comes into play, because in a Breathable Glass the bouquet and aromas of a wine already develop in only two to four minutes. Time-consuming decanting is no longer necessary, in a Breathable Glass the wine reaches its optimum already shortly after it is opened. The Breathable Glass has a completely natural effect – it simply strongly accelerates the reaction of the wine with the Atmospheric oxygen that takes place anyway. The original character of the wine and its structure are maintained, while the wine opens up and gains taste and volume.

Of course one might very well ask if this all really is true, or if it rather is wishful thinking of the marketing
department. Reliable proof can only be found in an independent expert test. And who could be better suited for this than Ronn Wiegand, Master of Wine and Master Sommelier from the Californian Napa Valley, a worldwide highly renowned wine consultant and wine specialist, who summarized his highly positive judgment in a short letter:
“I was of course skeptical at first of claims that they softened wines and enhanced
their characteristics within just a few minutes. But I found that they actually do. I tried nearly 30 different wine types in the three glass models you let me borrow. I found that in almost every case, the wines—whether red or white or rose, or light or full—tasted better in the ‘breathable’ glasses within a couple of minutes than the good stemware I have available to me from well known, prestigious stemware suppliers. I was especially impressed with how well the glasses truly enhanced lighter white wines (unoaked whites, such as Riesling and Italian whites) and lighter reds, notably Pinot Noir. Remarkable! Congratulations on a realcontribution to the enjoyment of wine.” – Ronn R. Wiegand, Master of Wine & Master Sommelier
The Breathable Glass was for the first time presented to the public at the Robert Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate 25th Anniversary Celebration in October 2004 at the Culinary Institute of America in California. The event taking place there, and in San Francisco, was exclusively held with Breathable Glasses.
